Facebook is an interesting social media and networking website; it encompasses many tasks and activities that have normally been accomplished on separate websites. For example, there are websites created specifically for gaming, blogging, micro-blogging, etcetera. Developers of social networking websites such as Facebook regularly research and keep track of what their active users do online in order to better integrate activities and functions that increase the current population (around 400 million so far). Facebook alone currently has the capability for users to instant message, upload photo albums, record videos, play games, blog (writing ‘Notes’), micro-blog (status updates) and more. Because Facebook is used by so many, it is inevitable that it changes how people communicate with each other and has vast impacts on relationships. In this project we will research relationships, more specifically romantic relationships (not including marriages) on Facebook. Using research techniques such as surveys, actively participating on Facebook, and drawing upon academic articles, we hope to gain a better understanding of how Facebook has changed the way romantic relationships form and function. This project is divided into three general parts; we will discuss relationships that began pre-Facebook, relationships that have started during the use of Facebook, and how Facebook might continue to change relationships in the future.
Feel free to add, change, whatever! Sorry I haven't put up my two pages yet; it's not finished. Should be up later today!
